UBB folk ensemble Mugurelul showcases Romanian heritage at Karlovac Folklore Festival
The University of Babeș‑Bolyai’s student folk ensemble “Mugurelul” represented Romania at the 27th International Folklore Festival in Karlovac, Croatia, from 5 – 11 July 2026. The group performed in Karlovac and nearby towns, presenting Transylvanian repertoire that highlighted the doina and the traditional game fecioresc, both listed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The festival, organized under the CIOFF umbrella, gathered ensembles from Croatia, Romania, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Singapore, Uzbekistan and Madagascar. Alongside performances, the Romanian delegation took part in institutional dialogues with local authorities and offered a cultural food showcase, preparing the Romanian dessert papanași for the audience. The participation continues UBB’s long‑standing tradition of promoting Romanian cultural heritage abroad.
