Ube production rises in Philippines amid growing global demand

Ube, a variety of purple yam (Dioscorea alata), is experiencing a surge in global popularity, transitioning from a traditional Filipino staple to a mainstream ingredient in international cafes and bakeries. Its vibrant violet color and mild, nutty sweetness have made it a popular choice for desserts, pastries, and specialty beverages worldwide.

In response to rising domestic and international demand, the Philippine Statistics Authority reported that ube production reached its highest level for the second quarter since 2010. Between April and June 2026, the country produced 1,681.67 metric tons, representing a 22.5% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

To support this growth, the Philippine Department of Agriculture has taken steps to expand production. In June 2026, the department distributed over 60,000 planting materials to farmers in Leyte and Bohol to boost farming income and supply.
