UBEC renovates 287 schools and 4,000 classrooms in Nigeria
The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has renovated 287 schools and more than 4,000 classrooms across Nigeria. This initiative is part of a new ‘whole-school approach’ designed to transform learning environments by addressing comprehensive infrastructural needs rather than focusing on isolated classroom repairs.
UBEC Executive Secretary Dr. Aisha Garba announced that the commission has established minimum standards for new school infrastructure. Under this mandate, interventions must now include essential facilities such as perimeter fencing, security infrastructure, solar power, boreholes, adequate toilets, administrative blocks, and playgrounds. The strategy also aims to integrate digital learning tools, including computer laboratories and smart boards, to prepare students for modern technological demands.
Garba stated that the approach requires federal, state, and local governments to assess the total needs of a school before beginning construction or rehabilitation. This ensures that students are not left with partial fixes, such as a single renovated window or chair, but instead receive a complete environment conducive to teaching and learning.
