Uber and Wayve launch first robotaxi service in London

Uber and autonomous driving startup Wayve have launched the first robotaxi service for general passengers in London. The service utilizes 15 Ford Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles equipped with Wayve’s ‘AV2.0’ technology.

Unlike traditional autonomous systems that rely heavily on high-definition maps, Wayve’s ‘AI Driver’ learns from real-world driving experiences to navigate complex urban environments. The service is available across most of London, excluding airport zones, for users booking UberX, Uber Electric, or Uber Comfort rides at no additional cost.

During this initial phase, all vehicles will carry a professional driver licensed by Transport for London (TfL) to monitor the system and intervene if necessary. While the fleet is currently small, over 140,000 users have already expressed interest through the app’s ride preferences. The partnership aims to expand to 12 global markets, including a planned deployment of Nissan Leaf vehicles in Tokyo, Japan.
