Uber and Wayve ready to launch autonomous robotaxi service in London

Uber has partnered with UK‑based autonomous‑driving firm Wayve to introduce a robotaxi service in London. Transport for London (TfL) granted Private Hire Vehicle licences to Wayve’s fleet of all‑electric Ford Mustang Mach‑E cars equipped with Wayve’s AI Driver, satisfying the required “triple‑lock” of operator, driver and vehicle licences. Each vehicle will carry a TfL‑licensed driver who monitors the journey while the AI handles the driving.

More than 100,000 Londoners signed up to Uber’s interest list within eight weeks, and a limited group of riders will receive early access this summer before a full rollout later in the year. Wayve’s system relies on experience‑based learning rather than high‑definition maps, and the technology has been tested in over 500 cities worldwide. Uber, after ending its own self‑driving program following a fatal test, is now integrating partner robotaxis into its platform.
