Uber driver arrested in Johannesburg following alleged student assault

An Uber driver has been arrested in Johannesburg following the alleged sexual assault of a student in Braamfontein. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit responded to the complaint involving a white Renault Clio.

University security assisted JMPD officers in tracing the vehicle from the city centre to a car wash in Jeppestown. Although the driver had left the vehicle at the car wash, officers successfully located and arrested the suspect at his residence. The man was detained at the Hillbrow police station.

The incident has raised renewed concerns regarding the safety of passengers using app-based transport services, particularly students traveling alone.
