Brazil gig workers launch national strike over pay and platform rules

Delivery and ride-hailing workers in Brazil have organized a national strike, known as ‘Breque Geral dos Apps’, for September 1st. The mobilization aims to pressure platforms for better pay, specifically requesting R$ 10 for short trips and R$ 2.50 per kilometer. Workers are also demanding greater transparency regarding account suspensions and are calling for government intervention to establish minimum rates.

In response to economic shifts, the Brazilian government has expanded the Move Brasil program, raising the vehicle financing ceiling from R$ 150,000 to R$ 200,000 and including hybrid models. This change is intended to facilitate vehicle acquisition for taxi and app drivers. Complementing this, the insurance company Youse has launched specialized auto insurance products tailored to the high-intensity usage patterns of these professionals.

Meanwhile, Uber is testing a new dispatch fee model in parts of Europe, such as Sweden and Switzerland, which charges drivers for trip offers even if they decline them. In Brazil, the platform continues to enforce strict conduct guidelines, where violations such as harassment, fraud, or excessive trip cancellations can lead to permanent bans.
