Uber executive predicts end of car ownership and driver's licenses

Uber President and COO Andrew Macdonald predicts that within 15 to 20 years, private car ownership and driver's licenses may become obsolete. Speaking on the 20VC podcast, Macdonald argued that personal vehicles are 'the most inefficient asset' because they remain idle for 98% of the day while incurring continuous costs such as depreciation and insurance.

Macdonald envisions a future mobility landscape dominated by a combination of autonomous vehicles, public transportation, bicycles, and electric scooters. This shift would represent a significant cultural change, particularly in the United States, where car ownership has long been a symbol of independence and the 'American Dream.'

In response to these technological shifts, Uber has pivoted its strategy. Rather than developing its own autonomous fleet, the company is positioning itself as an operating platform for autonomous driving technologies. Uber is actively collaborating with companies like Waymo and Waabi to integrate their self-driving capabilities into the Uber network.
