Uber launches accessibility features for elderly and disabled passengers
Uber has introduced a new set of tools called ‘Departure Preferences’ designed to assist elderly passengers and people with disabilities (PwDs) during the vehicle boarding process. The feature allows users to customize how a driver notifies them of their arrival, with four signaling options available: calling the passenger by name, contacting them through the app, flashing headlights, or using the horn.
Users can also save specific identification details to their profiles, such as the use of a white cane, conventional cane, crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs. These details are automatically shared with drivers for compatible trips, eliminating the need for passengers to repeat instructions for every ride. The company noted that while these tools improve communication and identification, they do not guarantee the automatic availability of vehicles specifically adapted for wheelchair transport.
The update is being rolled out gradually across Brazil. To activate the feature, users can navigate to the ‘Accessibility’ section within the ‘Settings’ menu of the Uber app.
