Uber launches traditional taxi service in Costa Rica
Uber has launched ‘Uber Taxi’ in Costa Rica, a new service that allows users to request traditional red taxis directly through the application. The service officially began operations on September 29 with more than 300 affiliated taxi drivers already registered on the platform.
Under this new modality, trip fares will align with the regulated rates for traditional taxi services. Users can view an estimated cost of their journey before requesting a ride. To participate, drivers were required to meet specific regulatory standards, including possessing a C1 driver's license, valid vehicle inspections, and a driver code issued by the Public Transport Council (CTP).
This expansion follows a mobility study by CID Gallup indicating that 9 out of 10 Costa Ricans would be willing to use red taxis if they could be requested via an app. The service places Uber in direct competition with DiDi, which has offered a similar traditional taxi service in the country since 2023. Uber Taxi is part of an international offering already available in markets such as the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, and Chile.
