Uber robotaxi launch in Zurich delayed amid political opposition
Uber's plans to launch commercial robotaxi services in Zurich by the end of this year have been delayed. The Swiss Federal Roads Office (Astra) confirmed that the previously announced 2026 start is currently on hold because Uber has not yet submitted a formal application for the necessary permits.
Uber had intended to partner with Chinese autonomy specialist We Ride and fleet manager Rydera to use Zurich as a testing ground for driverless rides via the Uber app. However, the complex federal approval processes and the requirement for detailed safety proofs have made a launch within this year impossible.
The delay coincides with growing political opposition in the Zurich City Council. An alliance of the SP, Green, and Alternative List (AL) parties has submitted a motion to block the introduction of robotaxis or, at minimum, impose strict regulations. The politicians argue that Zurich's dense traffic network poses safety risks and that autonomous vehicles could compete unfairly with the city's well-developed public transportation system. They have proposed measures such as driving bans in residential areas, speed limits, and caps on the number of vehicles.
