Uber Technologies expands autonomous vehicle strategy and partnerships

Uber Technologies is undergoing a strategic transition toward autonomous vehicle integration. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced that the company plans to deploy approximately $10 billion over the next few years to assist partners in scaling autonomous vehicle technology. While autonomous rides are currently active in seven cities, the company aims to expand this to 15 cities by the end of 2026.

In Japan, Uber is preparing for a late-2026 autonomous vehicle pilot in Tokyo through a partnership with Hinomaru Kotsu. The local taxi operator will be responsible for fleet operations and maintenance.

Institutional interest in Uber remains high, with approximately 80.24% of the company's stock owned by institutional investors and hedge funds. Recent filings show significant activity from major entities, including Vanguard Group Inc., which holds over 192 million shares, and Norges Bank, which recently acquired a new stake valued at approximately $2.5 billion.
