Uber, Tesla, and Google compete in Spain's autonomous driving race
Major technology companies, including Uber, Tesla, and Google, are competing to develop and implement autonomous driving systems in Spain. These firms are testing their technologies across various Spanish routes to facilitate rapid deployment.
In a recent development, the Spanish fleet management company Avomo has partnered with WeRide and Uber to launch a robotaxi service in Madrid. The company aims to make Madrid one of the first European cities to host such a system. The deployment will be gradual, starting with safety drivers on board in controlled areas.
Avomo has received authorization from the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) to operate 20 robotaxis. These vehicles will undergo two years of testing to develop Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities. The planned testing routes are located in the northeast of Madrid, covering areas such as Hortaleza, Sanchinarro, Las Tablas, La Moraleja, and Alcobendas.
