Uberlândia adoption rates face profile mismatch amid STF ruling

A recent decision by the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) to equalize maternity leave rights for biological and adoptive mothers has highlighted the adoption landscape in Uberlândia. The ruling guarantees 120 days of paid leave, with the possibility of a 60-day extension, recognizing the necessity of time for adaptation and bond-building in adoptive families.

Data from the local Court of Childhood and Youth reveals that 173 families are currently cleared for adoption in Uberlândia, while 13 children and adolescents are ready for permanent placement. An additional 11 youths are in the approximation stage to meet potential guardians. Statistics show 38 adoptions were completed in 2024, 28 in 2025, and 23 so far in 2026.

A significant challenge remains the mismatch between the profiles sought by applicants and the children available. Of the 13 youths ready for adoption, 11 are adolescents and only two are young children. Most applicants tend to seek infants or young children, leaving many adolescents in institutional care for longer periods. The organization Pontes de Amor works to support families and prepare applicants to address these challenges.
