Brazil advances animal welfare and cultural heritage legislation

Brazil is seeing significant legislative activity regarding animal welfare and cultural heritage. In the federal sphere, the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) approved the ‘Estatuto dos Cães e Gatos’ (Dog and Cat Statute), which recognizes pets as sentient beings with rights to food, health, and protection from abuse. Additionally, the Chamber of Deputies approved a project to punish those who abandon animals using vehicles, proposing heavy fines and the potential suspension or revocation of driver's licenses.

In Paraná, the State Legislative Assembly is advancing several cultural recognition projects. These include designating the ‘Sarro’ rhythm, electronic music, and the traditional ‘cataia’ beverage as intangible cultural heritage of the state. The assembly also approved the establishment of ‘Korean Culture Day’ to celebrate regional diversity. These measures aim to protect local traditions and promote the economic and social value of various cultural movements.
