Ubisoft's Black Flag Resynced Launch Spurs Record Sales, Layoffs and Future Strategy

Ubisoft's remake of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag sold more than 2 million copies on its first day and reached almost 100,000 concurrent players on Steam, setting a franchise record and pushing overall Assassin’s Creed sales past 250 million copies.

The strong launch lifted Ubisoft’s share price by over 20 % in a month, restoring investor confidence after a period of restructuring and project cancellations. Analysts point to the remake as the primary driver of the recent financial rebound.

Players criticised the addition of expensive micro‑transaction bundles, some costing up to €84. Ubisoft replied that all DLCs are optional extras and the base game offers the complete experience.

A Ubisoft Connect outage on 10‑11 July prevented PC users from launching the game, even in offline mode, with speculation that DRM checks tied to Denuvo were the cause.

Separately, Ubisoft Barcelona announced layoffs of 51 staff members – about 28 % of the studio – despite the title’s success. Workers said recent remote‑work policy changes and the lack of union recognition prompted the dispute.

Looking ahead, Ubisoft plans a lighter release slate for 2026 and a significantly larger content pipeline for fiscal years 2027‑28 and 2028‑29, including new Assassin’s Creed titles such as Hexe and Jade, while continuing investment in its live‑service roadmap.
