Ubisoft files trademarks for ‘Motherbrain’ AI project

Ubisoft is advancing an internal generative artificial intelligence initiative codenamed ‘Motherbrain’. Recent trademark filings in France reveal the project covers a wide range of applications, including software for creating interactive content, simulating conversations, and AI-driven research and design.

This push toward automation comes during a period of significant restructuring for the publisher, which has recently seen studio closures and the layoff of approximately 380 employees. CEO Yves Guillemot has compared the integration of generative AI to the industry-wide transition from 2D to 3D graphics, viewing it as a fundamental technological revolution.

Previous AI efforts at Ubisoft include ‘Ghostwriter’, a tool for generating NPC dialogue, and ‘NEO NPC’ for creating more reactive characters. The ‘Motherbrain’ project aims to further integrate machine learning into development workflows to assist human teams with tasks such as prototyping, world-building, and dialogue generation.
