Ubisoft's Beyond Good & Evil 2 remains in pre-production after 18 years

Eighteen years after its initial announcement in 2008, Ubisoft's Beyond Good & Evil 2 has reportedly failed to enter full production. According to reports from Origami, the project remains stuck in the pre-production phase due to continuous shifts in creative direction and organizational challenges.

At least 250 employees, primarily based at Ubisoft Montpellier, continue to work on the title. The project has undergone significant conceptual changes; originally envisioned as a massive multiplayer experience similar to Destiny or Fortnite, the scope has reportedly shrunk. Recent directions suggest a shift toward a “solo first” experience with a strong narrative, moving away from its previous multiplayer-centric goals.

These frequent revisions to core mechanics, such as combat systems and gameplay objectives, have prevented the team from establishing a definitive production structure. While the project has long been considered difficult to cancel, internal sources suggest that recent restructuring at Ubisoft may change its future outlook.
