uBlock Origin ceases active maintenance of Facebook ad filters
The open-source browser extension uBlock Origin has announced it will stop actively maintaining filters to block advertisements on Facebook. Maintainers cited the extreme difficulty of the task, noting that Facebook developers frequently implement countermeasures to bypass public filter rules, often rendering fixes obsolete within hours.
This decision highlights a structural advantage held by large platforms that control their entire delivery stack. By altering element names, moving content, or serving ads through first-party infrastructure, platforms can make sponsored content indistinguishable from organic posts.
Beyond user experience and revenue concerns, the retreat from ad blocking carries security implications. Experts note that ad blockers serve a critical role in preventing users from encountering malicious or scam advertisements that impersonate trusted brands, promote fake investments, or lead to fraudulent websites. While custom filters and other services like AdGuard may still provide coverage, the official uBlock Origin maintenance team will no longer prioritize updates for Facebook's evolving ad delivery methods.
