Mayor Kordić presents five‑year plan to close and revitalize Mostar’s Uborak landfill

The Uborak landfill in Mostar has been plagued by years of mismanagement, frequent waste‑transport crises and a recent fire that caused extensive damage to the facility and surrounding property. Mayor Mario Kordić used a special council meeting to unveil a detailed five‑year closure and remediation programme. The plan calls for sealing the site with a cover layer and vegetation, installing systems to control emissions, treat leachate water, and safely manage mixed municipal waste on a 0.6‑hectare sanitary field. It also includes fire‑prevention measures, odor control and integration of the reclaimed area into the local environment to improve residents’ quality of life. Kordić stressed the need for council backing and warned that interim waste disposal elsewhere is not a long‑term solution, noting that the emergency model will be costly but necessary after the fire. Critics have accused politicians of exploiting the crisis for electoral gain, while local activists demand accountability and swift action to protect public health.
