Swiss SMI reaches record high as oil prices slide
Oil prices fell after the United States halted its attacks on Iran, prompting a risk‑on shift across European equity markets. The Swiss SMI climbed to roughly 14,413 points, a new record high, up about 0.6 %. The EuroStoxx 50 rose 1.2 % to 6,357 points and Germany’s DAX gained 0.6 % to 25,517, closing in on its own record level. In the United Kingdom, the FTSE 100 advanced 0.5 % to 10,785 points.
Market analysts, including Jürgen Molnar of Robomarkets, linked the rally to the easing of geopolitical tension and the consequent slip in oil prices, which dropped about 2.6 % with Brent at $86.04 a barrel. Sectors that benefited most were automobiles, travel, technology and retail, while oil‑and‑gas stocks lagged.
The broad recovery underscores how quickly European markets respond to shifts in global energy pricing and geopolitical developments.
