UBS Survey Finds One‑Third of Asian Families Already Shifting $83 trillion in Wealth to Next Generation
A UBS Global Wealth Management survey of next‑generation wealthy families in Asia‑Pacific shows that about one‑third of respondents say their families are already transferring wealth, with a further 25% actively planning the transition alongside professional advisers. The bank estimates roughly $83 trillion in private wealth will change hands globally over the next two to three decades.
Seventy‑two percent of Asian respondents rely primarily on wealth managers or family offices for succession advice, and 78 % cite global connectivity and networking as the most important factor when choosing a wealth manager. The study notes that wealth transfer in the region is often linked to family milestones such as the passing of an older generation, contrasting with the stewardship‑focused approach in Europe and North America.
Traditional assets remain dominant, with 79 % of next‑gen portfolios weighted in stocks and bonds, but interest in sustainable and impact investing is rising, nearly half of respondents expressing strong interest, compared with just 11 % holding cryptocurrency exposure. UBS executives emphasized the trend, with Amy Lo stating, “Across Asia Pacific, the next generation is approaching wealth transfer with a strong sense of stewardship,” and Young Jin Yee noting, “The great wealth transfer is already underway.”
