UBTech unveils U1 humanoid robot to combat loneliness for singles and seniors in China

Chinese robotics firm UBTech introduced the UWORLD U1, a life‑size humanoid robot featuring biomimetic skin, integrated AI and an emotion‑recognition system that can identify over 20 emotional states with more than 90 % accuracy. The company says the robot can perform up to 90 % of basic human movements and is marketed as a long‑term companion.

UBTech targets two large demographic groups in China: roughly 120 million single adults and about 320 million seniors aged over 60. Pre‑sales of the U1 have begun, and the product is positioned as part of a growing Chinese market for AI‑driven companion devices. Analysts note that the sector is seen as strategic alongside electric vehicles and batteries, while ethicists warn of privacy, dependence and the commercialization of intimate relationships.

The rollout reflects China’s broader push to place advanced robots in homes, retail, logistics and healthcare, aiming to capture data, services and subscription revenue as the technology matures.
