UC Berkeley former softball coach sued for sexual misconduct

A former University of California, Berkeley softball player has filed a lawsuit against the university and former head coach Chelsea Spencer, alleging sexual assault, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The lawsuit, filed in Alameda County Superior Court, claims that Spencer used her position of authority to pressure the player into a sexual relationship beginning in 2023. The plaintiff alleges that Spencer’s personal attention became increasingly intense and that the coach’s authority over athletic opportunities was intertwined with their personal dynamic. Specifically, the player claims that when she attempted to distance herself from the coach, Spencer retaliated by decreasing her playing time.

The complaint further alleges that the university was negligent, stating that an internal investigation had previously found Spencer in violation of campus policy. The lawsuit also claims that other coaching staff and Spencer’s then-wife were aware of the relationship. Spencer, who resigned from her position in June 2025, has indicated her intention to address the allegations through the legal process.
