UC Davis Brain‑Computer Interface Restores Speech for ALS Patient, Enables Full‑Time Work

Researchers at the University of California, Davis demonstrated that an intracortical brain‑computer interface (BCI) can restore speech and cursor control for a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) who cannot speak. Over a period of nearly two years, the patient used the system at home for more than 3,800 hours, generating 183,060 sentences and nearly two million words at an average rate of 56 words per minute. The BCI decoded neural activity associated with attempted speech, translating it into text with greater than 99 % precision on a 125 000‑word vocabulary and about 92 % precision on everyday sentences. This capability allowed the patient to send emails, browse the internet, and maintain full‑time employment from his residence.

The device combines a speech decoder with a cursor‑control module and requires wired connections and daily setup by a trained caregiver, limiting immediate large‑scale adoption. The findings were published in Nature Medicine and highlight a potential pathway for communication and digital access for individuals with severe paralysis and speech loss.
