UC San Diego study finds individual breaths leave unique fingerprints on brain activity
Researchers at the University of California San Diego have discovered that individual breaths leave a unique “fingerprint” on brain activity. A study published in the Journal of Neuroscience suggests that the brain tracks subtle variations in each respiratory cycle, such as changes in duration, intensity, and the slope of inhalation and exhalation.
By analyzing data from 16 epilepsy patients with implanted brain electrodes, the team found that the specific shape of each breath corresponds to the shape of neural oscillations in brain regions responsible for emotion, memory, attention, and perception. These areas include the insula, hippocampus, amygdala, and parts of the frontal lobe.
This finding indicates a much more nuanced connection between mechanical breathing and mental processes than previously understood through simple metrics like breaths per minute. The researchers suggest that understanding these brain-body interactions could be vital for assessing and treating neuropsychiatric populations.
