UC Santa Barbara launches new undergraduate AI major

University of California, Santa Barbara is launching a new undergraduate major in artificial intelligence this fall. The program includes a freshman seminar, CMPSC 1A, taught by computer science professor Xifeng Yan.

The seminar aims to introduce students to foundational topics such as agentic AI, robotics, AI safety, AI for science, and vibe coding. According to teaching professor Diba Mirza, the goal is to train a new generation of professionals who understand AI deeply and can create technology that serves humankind while addressing the ethical debates surrounding its societal impact.
