Peru fuel price hikes trigger regional strikes and highway blockades
Rising fuel prices have triggered widespread protests and strikes across several Peruvian regions. In Ucayali, transport unions and social organizations have initiated an indefinite strike, leading to blockades on sections of the Federico Basadre highway. These protests are driven by the increase in fuel costs, which in Pucallpa have risen from approximately S/15 to S/20 per gallon.
In Loreto, the situation is even more severe, with fuel prices reportedly reaching up to S/30 per gallon. This has prompted a planned 48-hour strike for August 12 and 13 involving public transport, mototaxistas, and river operators. In Tacna, the Regional Education Directorate suspended in-person classes for Monday and Tuesday as a preventive measure due to the unrest.
Amidst the crisis, Osinergmin conducted inspections at 63 gas stations in Pucallpa to monitor fuel availability and price reporting. While the Ministry of Energy and Mines stated that fuel supply is currently guaranteed in Ucayali, the volatility of the market remains a concern. Additionally, Opecu reported that Petroperú and Repsol have implemented price reductions for various fuels, ranging from S/ 0.51 to S/ 0.84 per gallon, though GLP prices remain unchanged.
