Uche Nnaji pledges free shops for displaced Enugu traders
Uche Nnaji, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Enugu State, has pledged to rebuild demolished markets and provide free shops to displaced traders if elected in 2027. During a meeting with a coalition of interest groups—including leaders from the Arewa Northern Forum, the Inter-Faith Council, and artisans from Gariki Market—Nnaji addressed the economic hardships caused by market demolitions and multiple taxation.
Nnaji stated his administration would review the circumstances of the demolitions and aim to construct replacement markets. He noted that, depending on available resources, shops would be allocated to original owners free of charge, though a phased payment arrangement might be considered if necessary.
In addition to market reconstruction, Nnaji promised to review the state’s tax regime to abolish excessive and exploitative taxes. His platform also includes industrialization efforts in the oil, cement, iron ore, and steel sectors to drive job creation, alongside promises of free healthcare for elderly residents and a commitment to transparent, participatory governance.
