UCI levies heavy fines on Belgian cycling teams after material check mishap

Former Soudal Quick-Step CEO Patrick Lefevere questioned the UCI's fine fund, noting that the international cycling federation has collected more than €10,000 in penalties from the Tour Auvergne‑Rhône‑Alpes alone. He warned that such fines strain smaller teams' budgets.

Lotto‑Intermarché was fined over €3,250 for arriving one minute late to a mandatory material inspection before the team time trial, with each missing rider incurring a 500 Swiss franc penalty. The same rule saw Jayco AlUla and TotalEnergies receive even higher fines for similar infractions. Lefevere highlighted that the UCI’s strict enforcement, illustrated by the disqualification of Lorena Wiebes for a 20‑gram bike weight excess, leaves little room for error.

The fines, which affect Belgian squads most directly, raise concerns about the transparency and use of the UCI’s fine pool and the financial pressure on smaller professional cycling teams.
