UCI prepares major reforms for professional cycling regulations
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is preparing a major overhaul of professional cycling, targeting both technical regulations and the sport's economic structure.
A primary focus is the revision of the Lugano Charter, a foundational document established in 1996. The UCI intends to review the technical standards that govern bicycle design, including the traditional double-triangle frame structure and the 6.8 kg minimum weight limit established in 2000. The organization plans to consult with manufacturers and stakeholders between February and April 2027, with a new version of the Charter expected later that year.
Beyond equipment, the UCI is addressing systemic issues through its ‘Future of Road Cycling’ initiative. Based on consultations with federations, teams, and organizers, several structural reforms are being considered. These include the potential implementation of budget limits for teams to reduce financial disparities, the creation of a geographic-based racing calendar to minimize travel, and a reorganization of audiovisual rights distribution.
