UCI Under Scrutiny Over Lorena Wiebes Ban and Upcoming Bike Computer Size Limit

Dutch sprint champion Lorena Wiebes was stripped of her yellow jersey and stage win from the 2026 Giro d’Italia after the UCI classified her sprint finish as a “serious breach of sporting regulations.” Wiebes’s team, Worx‑Protime, publicly accused the UCI of ignoring multiple appeals and called the penalty “unjust,” while the rider herself described the sanction as disproportionate. The dispute has reignited calls for greater transparency and faster appeal processes within the sport’s governing body.

Separately, the UCI released a regulation that will cap the maximum dimensions of on‑board bike computers at 126 × 71 mm, effective 1 January 2028. The federation said the rule aims to reduce rider cognitive load and improve safety, although critics argue the evidence for the change is weak and that larger screens could actually enhance safety.
