UCLA and USC football programs focus on strategic development

UCLA football coach Bob Chesney is placing a heavy emphasis on special teams as part of his strategic approach. Drawing from his previous experience as a special teams coordinator, Chesney incorporates dedicated special teams periods into every practice. To simulate game-like pressure, the coaching staff uses players to distract kickers during field-goal attempts and returns through shouting and running.

UCLA has also bolstered its staff by hiring special teams coordinator Drew Canan, who has worked with Chesney for 13 seasons. Key personnel include kicker Mateen Bhaghani, who has significant experience playing for both UCLA and California.

Meanwhile, USC enters a critical season under head coach Lincoln Riley. The program's potential success is heavily tied to the development of a highly-rated freshman class. Analysts suggest that if top prospects like Luke Wafle and wide receiver “Boobie” Feaster can quickly adapt to the collegiate level, USC could contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff.
