UCLA Law accused of illegal race-based admissions by DOJ
The U.S. Justice Department's Civil Rights Division has concluded that the UCLA School of Law engaged in illegal race-based discrimination during its admissions processes for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 incoming classes. Investigators found that the institution favored Black and Hispanic applicants over white and Asian American applicants, noting that admitted Black applicants had lower average LSAT scores than their white counterparts.
The Department alleged that UCLA Law operated a 'two-tiered' admissions system and violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Furthermore, officials stated that admissions staff coached applicants on how to disclose their race through personal essays and recruitment events, such as a 'Diversity Admissions Open House,' in a manner that bypassed the 2023 Supreme Court restrictions on affirmative action.
UCLA School of Law has disputed these findings, asserting that its selection process is comprehensive and merit-based. The school maintains that its decisions comply with all applicable federal and state laws, including the U.S. Constitution and California's Proposition 209.
