UCLA Neurologist suggests word-based drills to combat brain fog
Dr. Rhonda Voskuhl, a UCLA neurology professor and co-founder of Cleopatra RX, suggests that generic cognitive exercises like Sudoku or math-based puzzles may be ineffective for addressing brain fog. Speaking at the Livelong Women’s Health Summit, Voskuhl noted that brain fog, particularly when triggered by hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause, typically affects specific functions rather than overall intelligence.
According to Voskuhl, the primary issues involve verbal memory—the ability to recall names and words—and processing speed. While logic and reasoning often remain intact, the brain's ability to retrieve stored information can slow down. Research and MRI studies indicate that these shifts can involve functional connection issues and atrophy in the hippocampus. To address these specific deficits, Voskuhl recommends targeted word-based exercises rather than logic or number-based games.
