UCLA researchers develop PhoneBot robot using smartphone components
Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) have developed PhoneBot, a small robot that utilizes a smartphone as its central processing unit and sensory system. Developed by the RoMeLa robotics laboratory, the robot stands 48.3 centimeters tall and weighs 1.8 kilograms.
The smartphone acts as the brain of the device, using its internal sensors to monitor inclination and its processor to calculate movement commands. The phone's camera allows the robot to interpret its visual environment, while instructions are sent via Wi-Fi to an electronic board that controls 13 motorized joints. This integration allows the robot to maintain balance and execute movement orders.
