UCLA study identifies common nutritional traits in US comfort foods

Researchers conducting the UCLA Eating in America Study have found that nearly three in four popular comfort foods in the United States share similar nutritional characteristics. The study, published in the journal Nutrients, examined the nutritional composition, hyperpalatability, and ultra-processing levels of foods consumed in response to stress or negative emotions.

Findings indicate that these foods are often energy-dense and highly palatable, frequently containing high levels of saturated fats, added sugars, and sodium. The research highlights growing health concerns regarding the consumption of such ultra-processed items. The study utilized data from 1,760 adults to analyze how preferences for these foods vary across different demographics, including age, gender, and region.
