UCLA study: rapamycin briefly reverses autism-like brain changes in adult mice
A preclinical study led by UCLA Health researchers found that inflammation during mouse pregnancy can produce autism‑like brain and behavioral alterations in offspring. A single short‑term dose of the immunosuppressive drug rapamycin rapidly improved brain overactivity, seizure risk, sensory sensitivity, repetitive behaviors and abnormal functional network organization in adult mice, with effects observable within hours.
The researchers noted that the benefits were temporary, that repeated dosing lost efficacy and raised toxicity concerns, and that rapamycin is not a viable human therapy. Nonetheless, the findings suggest that some autism‑related brain changes remain modifiable in adulthood and point to new therapeutic targets that focus on functional circuitry rather than structural deficits.
