UCLA upsets No. 11 Virginia 2-1 in men’s soccer season opener

UCLA defeated No. 11 Virginia 2-1 in their men’s soccer season opener at Klöckner Stadium.

UCLA opened the scoring in the 38th minute when David de la Vibora headed in a corner kick from Jaime Amaro. Virginia responded in the 65th minute through Marco Dos Santos, who scored following an assist from Brendan Lambe. However, Logan Hall secured the victory for UCLA with a strike from the top of the penalty area in the 81st minute.

Virginia goalkeeper Spencer Sanderson made five saves in his collegiate debut. While Virginia outshot UCLA 10-6 in the second half, they were unable to find an equalizer. The loss brings Virginia’s all-time series record against UCLA to 3-8-1.
