U‑Cross System by Universal Signalling to Roll Out on Heart of Wales Line

Universal Signalling Ltd and Network Rail have agreed to deploy the U‑Cross digital signalling system across the entire 96‑mile Heart of Wales railway line in Wales. The rollout will cover more than 100 user‑worked level crossings, replacing costly traditional signalling with track‑mounted beacons that relay train location data to within 20 metres. A trial on an 11‑mile stretch between Llandeilo and Llandovery in late 2025 demonstrated reliable operation at line speed, even during severe weather.

Network Rail says the technology will improve safety and cut waiting times for farmers, residents and local businesses. Joshua Robinson, Route Engineer (Signalling) for Network Rail Wales and Borders, called the system “potentially transformational”, noting its lower cost and resilience. Installation work is set to begin in December, with an operational start date yet to be announced.
