UCSB PhD Student Vikram Mubayi Found Dead After Solo Hike in California

Vikram Mubayi, an Indian‑origin doctoral candidate in chemical engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, went missing on August 1 while hiking alone in the Big Pine Lakes area of Inyo National Forest, eastern Sierra Nevada. He last contacted his family around 8:30 p.m., sending GPS coordinates from the trail. A multi‑agency search led by the Inyo County Search and Rescue team and the California Highway Patrol recovered his body on the evening of August 3.

Mubayi, born and raised in Hong Kong and a former University of Illinois chemical‑engineering graduate, was remembered as an experienced hiker. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of death and have indicated no signs of foul play, with the investigation ongoing.
