UCSF researchers map autism protein interactions to aid therapy development
Scientists at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Institute of Quantitative Biosciences have developed an extensive molecular map of autism, identifying over 1,800 protein interactions. Published in the journal Science, the study analyzed proteins associated with 100 autism-risk genes.
Approximately 87% of these interactions had not been previously documented. The research highlights that while hundreds of different genetic mutations can increase autism risk, many of these alterations ultimately affect a much smaller, shared group of protein complexes.
By understanding how diverse genetic changes can produce similar effects on the brain's molecular machinery during development, researchers believe this could pave the way for precision medicine. This approach aims to develop treatments targeting shared molecular mechanisms rather than creating individual medications for every specific mutation.
