UCSF researchers map protein interactions to advance autism drug discovery

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) have developed a massive molecular map of autism, identifying 1,881 protein interactions involving 100 autism risk genes. Published in the journal Science, the study reveals that approximately 87 percent of these interactions had not been previously described.

The research highlights a critical convergence in autism biology: while hundreds of different genes and mutations can cause the condition, they tend to disrupt a much smaller, shared number of protein networks. This finding addresses a major hurdle in drug development, as it provides a mechanistic understanding of how genetic mutations reconfigure the molecular machinery of the developing brain.

By identifying these common molecular interfaces, scientists may be able to develop precision therapies aimed at restoring specific protein interactions rather than needing a unique drug for every individual mutation. While this is laboratory-based research and does not involve clinical trials or patient treatment, it provides a detailed framework for future drug discovery.
