UD Las Palmas celebrates 77 years and leads Segunda División

UD Las Palmas is celebrating its 77th anniversary following its foundation in 1949. The club, which was formed through the merger of five Canarian clubs to prevent the mass exodus of local talent to mainland Spain, has a storied history in Spanish football, including 36 seasons in the top flight and a league runner-up finish in the 1968-1969 season.

Currently competing in the Segunda División, the club has achieved a strong start to the 2026-2027 season with two consecutive wins. Amidst this success, club president Miguel Ángel Ramírez has made strong patriotic statements regarding the club's identity. Following a trip involving a charter flight to Tangier, Ramírez emphasized the club's Spanish and Canarian loyalty, denying any financial ties to Moroccan sponsors and addressing regional immigration sensitivities.
