Udaya Gammanpila challenges anti-terrorism Bill in Supreme Court

Former Minister Udaya Gammanpila has filed a petition with the Supreme Court challenging specific provisions of the government's proposed Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill. Gammanpila argues that certain elements of the legislation are inconsistent with the Constitution and violate fundamental rights. He is requesting a ruling that would require such provisions to be approved by a two-thirds parliamentary majority and a national referendum if enacted.

Additionally, Gammanpila has filed a writ petition at the Court of Appeal against a recent order from the Colombo Fort Magistrate. The magistrate's order prohibited Ven. Ulapane Sumangala Thera and 54 others from protesting outside the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo. The group had marched from Kandy to demand the release of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary, Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera.
