Udelar researchers analyze climate change and flood risks in Salto

Researchers from the Universidad de la República (Udelar) in Salto, Uruguay, have analyzed the impacts of climate change and the increasing risks of flooding in the region. During a scientific discussion titled ‘El norte investiga: fenómenos climáticos y territorio’, experts examined how extreme weather events affect urban infrastructure, local production, and daily life.

Key findings highlighted that flood risks in Salto are driven by intense rainfall and rising levels in the Uruguay River and urban streams. Experts noted that risk is exacerbated by human factors, including urban expansion, soil impermeability, and the occupation of flood-prone areas. The discussion emphasized the need for improved early warning systems, territorial planning, and public policies to protect vulnerable populations and the agricultural sector.
