Udine accelerates summer road and plaza renovations

The municipality of Udine is using the summer school break to advance a series of public‑works projects across the city. Works that began in early June include the five‑month refurbishment of Piazza Garibaldi, which will add new trees and event spaces, and the resurfacing of the long‑neglected via Bernardinis.

Other projects launched recently are the safety overhaul of viale Cadore, where the roots of maritime pines have lifted the road surface and sidewalks, and the construction of a new roundabout at the junction of via Diaz and viale della Vittoria. The roundabout, approved on 29 July 2025, costs €208,000 and has experienced a delay beyond the original 30 June deadline.

A larger renovation of the area bounded by via Gemona, via Deciani and via Santa Chiara, valued at €1.185 million, is slated to finish on 23 December, with sidewalk work completed by 26 July. Some merchants have complained that the June start may hurt summer sales. The municipal assessor for public works, Ivano Marchiol, says the works are progressing well and on schedule, while councilor Stefano Salmè criticises perceived delays, misaligned priorities and insufficient communication. Temperatures have reached 34 °C, and a regional ordinance restricting outdoor work between 12:30 and 16:00 does not apply to public‑utility projects that observe safety measures.
