Udine prepares for partial solar eclipse viewing at the Castle
The Municipality of Udine has announced special arrangements for residents and visitors to observe a partial solar eclipse on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. The Colle del Castello has been designated as a primary observation point due to its high elevation and unobstructed western views, which are ideal for viewing the sun as it nears the horizon.
The eclipse in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region is expected to begin around 19:26, with peak intensity occurring at 20:18. During this peak, the eclipse will reach a magnitude of approximately 0.917, covering over 91 percent of the sun's apparent diameter and leaving only a thin crescent visible shortly before sunset.
To facilitate public access, the road to the Castle and the castle elevator will remain open until midnight. Additionally, the Casa della Contadinanza will be open to host an independent event to accompany the evening's festivities.
