Udine prosecutors investigate death of activist Vito Caiafa

The Udine Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the death of Vito Caiafa, a 75-year-old prominent unionist and political activist from Sapri. Caiafa passed away on September 10 at the Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital in Udine.

The inquiry follows a complaint filed by the deceased's family, who are seeking to reconstruct the stages of his lengthy hospitalization to determine if medical care was managed correctly. Caiafa was originally admitted on July 20 for a scheduled procedure, but his clinical condition reportedly worsened over several weeks, leading to multiple interventions and his eventual transfer to intensive care.

An autopsy has been ordered to provide medical-legal evidence for the investigation. While the inquiry aims to clarify the circumstances of his death and identify any potential legal responsibilities, no conclusions regarding the conduct of medical staff have been made at this time.
