UDMR proposes grand coalition to prevent far-right rise in Romania

The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) is advocating for the formation of a ‘grand coalition’ to resolve Romania’s ongoing political crisis. Minister Cseke Attila stated that a broad alliance between pro-Western parties is necessary to prevent far-right groups from gaining power. He proposed a political agreement based on reciprocity, which could include a rotation of power between left-wing and right-wing governments.

Cseke emphasized that the country cannot continue to function effectively under the current interim government, which has had limited powers for approximately three and a half months. He argued that a technocratic government would lack the parliamentary representation needed to support legislative projects and that the solution to the crisis must be political rather than technical.

In contrast to the call for a coalition, USR Minister Diana Buzoianu suggested that if a parliamentary majority cannot be formed, early elections should be organized as soon as possible. She noted that the prolonged political deadlock is causing public frustration and stalling necessary reforms, particularly as the AUR party leads in recent polls.
